Team
The team is structured into 8 departments, organized according to their technical expertise and responsibilities.
1
Structures and Thermal Systems
3 MEMBERS
DEPARTMENT LEADER: GONÇALO VERÍSSIMO
In Structures and Thermal Systems, the main mission is to ensure the satellite's structural integrity by studying geometric centers, centers of mass, and material behavior, as well as designing and testing ventilation and energy dispersion systems to manage extreme space temperatures.
2
Attitude Determination & Control System
9 MEMBERS
DEPARTMENT LEADER: VICENTE AROSO
This department is based on two main pillars, Attitude Control and Orbit Control. In Attitude Control, the mission is to orient and stabilize the satellite using mechanical systems in order to align all the satellite's sensors and antennas with the Earth so that we can receive and transmit data in real time.
Simultaneously, another major focus is on orbital mechanics, where we will calculate and simulate optimal orbits for the satellite's operation.
In addition, we will work on the satellite's return to Earth by calculating and simulating orbit decay and re-entry trajectories.
3
Command and Data Handling
4 MEMBERS
DEPARTMENT LEADER: LUCAS COSTA
The Command and Data Handling (CDH) department is responsible for the management and processing of all spacecraft commands and data. This department oversees the design, implementation, and operation of the onboard computer system, which includes handling communication between the satellite's subsystems, executing commands from the ground station, and managing data storage. The CDH team ensures that the CubeSat operates autonomously, efficiently, and securely throughout its mission.
4
Payload
4 MEMBERS
DEPARTMENT CO-LEADERS: DIOGO SANTOS & DINIS MARQUES
The Payload department designs, develops, and integrates the satellite's primary scientific or technical instruments, key to mission objectives. Responsibilities include defining goals, creating requirements, selecting components, and collaborating with suppliers. The department builds prototypes, integrates the payload, and conducts rigorous tests to ensure seamless integration with satellite systems. They also coordinate with external partners, maintain thorough documentation, and provide operational support during the mission, troubleshooting to optimize payload performance. Ultimately, their work ensures the satellite generates the critical data or results needed to achieve mission success.
5
Power Systems
3 MEMBERS
DEPARTMENT LEADER: BEATRIZ LIMA
The Power Systems department designs and develops the satellite’s power generation, storage, and distribution systems, ensuring a reliable power supply throughout the mission. They select solar panels, batteries, and power management components, integrate them with the satellite, and perform functional, thermal, and load tests. The team collaborates with other departments and external partners, monitors power performance during the mission, and troubleshoots issues to optimize power usage. Their work is essential, as a dependable power supply is critical to all satellite operations and mission success.
6
Communications Systems
5 MEMBERS
DEPARTMENT LEADER: RITA BORGES
The Communications Systems department ensures that the CubeSat correctly transmitts and receives the necessary information for the mission. This department is divided into two main sub-departments: Antenna Design & RF Systems.
7
Operations & Marketing
8 MEMBERS
DEPARTMENT LEADER: MANUEL CAMELO
The Operations & Marketing department is responsible for external affairs, marketing, logistics and finances. This consists in managing public relations, coordinating logistics for all operations, and overseeing budget and financial planning.
8
Research & Development
3 MEMBERS
DEPARTMENT LEADER: BERNARDO MARCHANA
The Research & Development department is a multidisciplinary team responsible for the design and testing of systems for satellites bigger than 1U. Additionally, its goal is to develop innovative solutions to make our satellite systems more efficient.
